fb 777 casino WASHINGTON -- Military leaders are rattled by a list of “woke” senior officers that a conservative group urged Pete Hegseth to dismiss for promoting diversity in the ranks if he is confirmed to lead the Pentagon. The list compiled by the American Accountability Foundation includes 20 general officers or senior admirals and a disproportionate number of female officers. It has had a chilling effect on the Pentagon’s often frank discussions as leaders try to figure out how to address the potential firings and diversity issues under President-elect Donald Trump. Those on the list in many cases seem to be targeted for public comments they made either in interviews or at events on diversity, and in some cases for retweeting posts that promote diversity. Tom Jones, a former aide to Republican senators who leads the foundation, said Friday that those on the list are “pretty egregious” advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, policies, which he called problematic. “The nominee has been pretty clear that that has no place in the military,” Jones said of Hegseth. Hegseth has embraced Trump’s effort to end programs that promote diversity in the ranks and fire those who reflect those values. Other Trump picks, like Kash Patel for FBI director, have suggested targeting those in government who are not aligned with Trump. But Hegseth has been fighting to save his nomination as he faces allegations of excessive drinking and sexual assault and over his views questioning the role of women in combat. He spent the week on Capitol Hill trying to win the support of Republican senators, who must confirm him to lead the Pentagon, doing a radio interview and penning an opinion column. Some service members have complained in the past about the Pentagon's DEI programs, saying they add to an already heavy workload. The Pentagon still has a long way to go in having a general officer corps or specialty occupations such as pilots that have a racial and gender makeup reflective of the country. A defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the list said senior leaders are hoping that once Trump is sworn in, they will be able to discuss the issue further. They are prepared to provide additional context to the incoming administration, the official told The Associated Press, which is not publishing the names to protect service members’ privacy. Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Friday that the list would have “considerable, wide and deep consequences.” He said when military members see people singled out, they will start focusing on their own survival rather than the mission or their job. “You will drive people out,” Hagel said. “It affects morale as widely and deeply as anything — it creates a negative dynamic that will trickle through an organization." The list, which was first reported by The New York Post, includes nine Air Force general officers, seven Navy admirals of different ranks and four Army general officers. Eight of those 20 are women even though only 17% of the military is female. None are Marines. One female Navy officer was named because she gave a speech at a 2015 Women’s Equality Day event, where she noted that 80% of Congress is male, which affects what bills move forward. The officer also was targeted because she said “diversity is our strength.” The phrase is a widely distributed talking point that officers across the Pentagon have used for years to talk about the importance of having a military that reflects different educational, geographic, economic, gender and racial backgrounds in the country. An Air Force colonel, who is white, was called out for an opinion piece he wrote following the death of George Floyd, saying, “Dear white colonel, we must address our blind spots about race.” A female Air Force officer was targeted because of “multiple woke posts” on her X feed, including a tweet about LGBTQ rights, one about “whiteness” and another about honoring the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on a stamp. Another female Air Force officer was on the list because she “served as a panelist for a diversity, equity and inclusion” discussion in 2021. The list names an Army officer who traveled to 14 historically Black colleges to expand the military’s intelligence recruitment efforts, and an Air Force officer partly because he co-chairs the Asian-Pacific Islander subgroup of the service’s diversity task force. Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump transition team, said in a statement that “No policy should be deemed official unless it comes directly from President Trump.” But in an interview Wednesday for Megyn Kelly’s SiriusXM satellite radio show, Hegseth said Trump told him he wanted a “warfighter” who would clean out the “woke crap.” Hegseth got a boost Friday from Trump, who posted on his social media site that Hegseth “will be a fantastic, high energy, Secretary of Defense.” The president-elect added that “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Jones told the AP in June that his American Accountability Foundation was investigating scores of federal employees suspected of being hostile to Trump's policies. The work aligns with the Heritage Foundation’s far-reaching Project 2025 blueprint for a conservative administration. A letter Jones sent to Hegseth containing the list, dated Tuesday, says “purging the woke from the military is imperative.” The letter points to tensions with Iran, Russia and China and says “we cannot afford to have a military distracted and demoralized by leftist ideology. Our nation’s security is at stake.” Conservatives view the federal workforce as overstepping its role to become a power center that can drive or thwart a president’s agenda. During the first Trump administration, government officials came under attack from the White House and congressional Republicans, as Trump's own Cabinet often raised objections to some of his more singular or even unlawful proposals. ___ AP writer Courtney Bonnell contributed from Washington.None

No. 8 Kentucky flying high ahead of Western Kentucky meetingPHOENIX — Every year, St. Vincent de Paul serves millions of meals to hungry families and individuals, with one of the largest industrial kitchens in the Southwest and four charitable dining rooms. RELATED: Turkey Tuesday: Donate to help feed Arizona families for the holiday season The St. Vincent de Paul's family dining room in Phoenix provides a unique and dignified experience for families in need. >> Download the 12News app for the latest local breaking news straight to your phone. When a family visits the dining room at St. Vincent de Paul, like Phoenix mom Alyssa DeSapio and four her kids, they are immediately surrounded with love, regardless of the struggles they’re enduring. “Take care of four of my kids and then I’m going to two different colleges, just to try to get out of the hood I guess you would say,” she said. For DeSapio, life isn’t easy. “It’s pretty hectic managing four different kids,” she said. "Their appointments, therapy, school on my own and helping them with their school, but we make it happen.” DeSapio says it’s especially difficult financially. “I’m basically living on a fixed income, I’m in section 8 housing, so I get a little check for my utilities and that doesn’t really cover my utilities, so I always fall behind, so financially I’m struggling,” she said. But still, she remains strong for her kids. “No matter what, I always make a way to find clothes or diapers or whatever they need,” said DeSapio. At SVDP’s family room, a team helps meet the needs of families like theirs. “We come almost every day,” she said. Families with children under 18 are seated together to enjoy a meal on tables with tablecloths with real silverware. Volunteers serve them restaurant-style, providing meal options for them to choose from, bringing the food to their table. It doesn’t feel like a traditional soup kitchen. “The dining room is open,” said Cindy Bernardo, the family evening program manager. “We’re feeding the residents and the families as we do Monday through Friday... they get to sit down and relax.” Bernardo says the families get a choice of two meals, to give them the feeling like they’re at a restaurant. The special experience is about so much more than just a hot meal. “Agencies come here so they can offer their services to the families, and then we had a barbershop quartet for the first time,” said Bernardo. For DeSapio and her kids, it’s a family experience where they feel respected and cared for. “It changes everything,” she said. “Places like this really help families like me, just be able to get the necessities that we need to get by.” The team of staff and volunteers in the dining room are truly making life better for DeSapio and her kids, along with so many others. “I just think it’s wonderful,” she said. “It is God’s work, definitely.” During the summer, the Phoenix dining room also serves as a heat relief station, offering cold water, air conditioning and temporary shelter to those experiencing homelessness. Other services like medical care, identification replacement and overnight shelter are also available through partner agencies for anyone in need. For more information, click here . Pennycuick announces new law criminalizing AI-generated deepfake child pornographyIt’s been 26 seasons since the Tennessee Volunteers have competed for a national championship in football. Following the 1998 campaign, the Vols defeated Florida State to kick off the BCS era of college football. Unfortunately for fans of the program, the greater part of the next two decades would see Tennessee fall from those heights. The decline began slowly, as head coach Phillip Fulmer still led the Vols to top-10 finishes in the AP poll in ‘99 and 2001. However, as the new millennium continued, Fulmer’s Vols moved further and further from national relevance. While Tennessee won the SEC East three times since 2001, many fans felt the program had hit its ceiling under the UT lifer by the 2008 season. That feeling was only amplified after a 13-7 loss to Wyoming, sealing Fulmer’s fate as the head coach. The athletic department wanted to give the historic brand an injection of new blood heading into ‘09, so the choice was made to bring in Lane Kiffin. Kiffin led the Vols back to a bowl game in his first season, and they were competitive against the likes of UCLA, then-No. 1 Florida, and then-No. 1 Alabama. It wasn’t all positive, though, as off-the-field headlines were made in November 2009 with three players being arrested for attempted armed robbery. Following the season, chaos ensued, as Kiffin left Knoxville in the middle of the night to take the Southern Cal coaching opening. Tennessee then had to find its third head coach in three years. They turned to Louisiana Tech’s Derek Dooley. Dooley’s three-year tenure was disastrous, as the Vols went through three straight losing seasons for the first time since 1909-11. As the UT head coach, Dooley went 5-19 in SEC play. Possibly the biggest embarrassment for the program in his time came in 2011, when the Vols lost 10-7 to a Kentucky team forced to start wide receiver Matt Roark at quarterback. The defeat also ended a 26-game winning streak in the rivalry for UT. Following the end of the Dooley tenure after 2012, the revolving door at head coach continued, as Butch Jones was the new man on the block. The former Cincinnati coach inherited a mess from Dooley, but Jones grew the program from a five-win season in year one to a seven-win campaign in year two. After reaching nine wins in 2015, fans believed 2016 would be the year the Vols finally returned to national prominence. After a hot start with wins over Florida and Georgia, the season flamed out to a 9-4 finish with losses to Texas A&M, Alabama, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. The disappointing year led to Jones’ seat being red-hot going into 2017, and he responded by not winning a conference game and getting fired before year’s end. Dysfunction around the football program continued in the search to find Jones’ replacement. A fan revolt, endless internet rumors, and an athletic director going rogue on the university all came within the single hiring cycle, creating a feeling of rock bottom around Knoxville. Eventually, Fulmer returned to campus in an AD role and hired Jeremy Pruitt as the next head coach of the Vols. Pruitt took the job while taking over a mess and somehow left town leaving the program in a bigger one. The former Alabama defensive coordinator was fired with cause in 2020 following a notice of recruiting violations. Before his firing, UT had nothing to write home about on the field. Pruitt only notched one winning season in three tries, and it came in a year where he lost to Georgia State at home. Enter Josh Heupel, who had possibly the lowest expectations of any Vols’ coach from the fanbase. But, he has yet to endure a losing season through four years, something a new coach hadn’t accomplished since Fulmer. Heupel helped the Vols get back to national prominence in his second year in 2022, as they were ranked No. 1 in the country during the season. They ended the year 11-2 with their first New Year’s Six bowl win since the 2004 Cotton Bowl. This year, Tennessee finally made its way back to competing for a national title. It will begin the journey against another storied program in Ohio State, a team it has only played once in its history. Unlike the bowl game, though, the Playoff game will be in Columbus. While many have voiced the challenge that could come from a southern team heading to the midwest in the winter. However, Heupel doesn’t buy the narrative. "Yeah, not sure what the temperature will be up there at night,” he said. “Know it won't be sunny and 85. We played in 30-degree weather a week ago. For us, a lot of our practices are in the morning, we're outside (and) it'll be similar temperatures to what you're going to get up there.” For many long-time Tennessee fans, the potential weather pales in comparison to some of the cold depths the football program reached since its last national title opportunity. The Giants were a no-show against the Bucs after releasing quarterback Daniel JonesNovember 22 - The surging Orlando Magic seek their eighth win in the last nine games on Saturday when they host the visiting Detroit Pistons. Orlando is returning home from a three-game Western swing in which it went 2-1, rebounding from a 104-93 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday with a 119-118 defeat of the Lakers on Thursday. The Magic weathered a combined 70 points from Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, thanks to Franz Wagner's 37 points and 11 assists. Orlando also got 23 points from Jalen Suggs and 19 off the bench courtesy of Moritz Wagner. Franz Wagner notched 15 of his team-high in the fourth quarter, the final three of which came on a step-back jumper from beyond the arc with 3.3 seconds remaining. The game-winner put an emphatic cap on his fourth 30-plus-point performance in the last six outings. He is averaging a career-best 23.2 points per game through the initial stretch of this season and shooting 35 percent on a career-high 6.1 3-point attempts per game. The outside shooting consistency is a significant improvement from 2023-24 when Franz Wagner shot just 28.1 percent from beyond the arc. "A lot of this stuff is mental for us players," Franz Wagner said. "So for me to get over that hump a little bit over the summer and carry that over into the season means a lot." After the two games in Los Angeles and a 109-99 win in Phoenix on Monday, Orlando returns home where it is undefeated this season. The Magic held opponents to 94 points or fewer in all five games of a homestand from Nov. 8-15, buoying the NBA's lowest scoring yield of 103.2 points per game. Detroit comes in on a run scoring 120 points or more in four of its last six games, though three of those went to overtime. The most recent of the Pistons' trio of extra-frame contests came on Thursday in a 123-121 loss at the Charlotte Hornets. Cade Cunningham scored 27 points and dished 10 assists for his ninth double-double of the season and fifth in a row. Over the ongoing stretch, Cunningham also produced a 21-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double in a 124-104 win over Washington on Sunday. Cunningham is averaging 23.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game heading into Saturday's matchup, and his 8.9 assists per game are fourth-most in the NBA. Against Charlotte, however, the Pistons could not withstand a barrage of 38 points from Brandon Miller and 35 from LaMelo Ball -- or a 20-point deficit in the third quarter. "We can't have those type of starts, especially on the road, giving teams confidence," Tobias Harris said of Detroit digging a deep hole early. "Games like this are important, though. There's so many teachable moments of how every possession matters and counts coming down into the fourth quarter and overtime." In terms of team growth, the Pistons have made huge strides from a season ago when they endured the longest single-season losing streak in NBA history at 28 games. With seven wins through the initial stretch of 2024-25, this season's Pistons are halfway to matching the team's win total of a season ago. Harris, an offseason acquisition, has contributed to the turnaround with 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tab
