— The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a generous contribution of US$5.1 million from the Government of Japan, aimed at supporting 37,000 smallholder farmers impacted by climate change in Zimbabwe. The initiative, spanning three years, targets five districts and seeks to enhance food security and resilience through water-based infrastructure, value chain development, and bolstered agricultural extension services. Announcing the project, the Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr Shinichi Yamanaka, underscored the emphasis on market-oriented agriculture. he said. The Japanese government will also contribute an additional US$72,000 towards the construction of sesame storage facilities in Mwenezi District, a project led by Sustainable Agriculture Technology (SAT). The initiative comes at a critical time as Zimbabwe continues to grapple with the effects of El Niño-induced droughts, which have exacerbated food insecurity and disrupted livelihoods. The project integrates food assistance with climate-resilient farming practices, empowering smallholder farmers to grow sustainable crops such as sesame, which has significant export potential. Barbara Clemens, WFP Country Representative and Director in Zimbabwe highlighted the broader impact of the project. she said. Central to the project’s objectives is the development of a robust sesame value chain, with a focus on both local and export markets. The collaboration with SAT is expected to bolster sesame production, improve value addition, and support procurement processes, opening new economic opportunities for farmers in Mwenezi and beyond. The initiative also includes capacity-building measures for agricultural extension services, ensuring that smallholder farmers receive the technical support needed to adapt to climate challenges and optimise production. Japan remains a key partner in Zimbabwe’s food security and resilience efforts. Since 2019, the Japanese government has contributed over US$28 million to WFP-led programmes aimed at assisting vulnerable communities. These contributions have provided life-saving food assistance during emergencies and supported resilience-building initiatives to combat the effects of climate change. As the world’s largest humanitarian organisation, the WFP continues to play a critical role in addressing food insecurity and fostering long-term resilience. By linking food assistance with sustainable practices, the WFP aims to create a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for communities recovering from the impacts of climate change and disasters. This latest collaboration between Japan and WFP reinforces a shared commitment to empowering vulnerable communities and ensuring a sustainable future for Zimbabwean smallholder farmers. This initiative exemplifies how international cooperation can address pressing global challenges such as climate-induced food insecurity while promoting sustainable agricultural practices and economic growth.Sans J.T. China's reported decision to build Three Gorges like mega hydel project on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra in India) is not just a strong reminder on the piling security costs attached to the delay in commencing work on the Upper Siang Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, but also a wake-up call on the need to treat water infrastructure building along the Himalayan rivers as a strategic imperative. ET Year-end Special Reads Corporate Kalesh: Top family disputes of India Inc in 2024 The world of business lost these eminent people in 2024 Fast, faster, fastest: How 2024 put more speed into your shopping Hydel projects are just as important as border roads. It took India decades to realise that its policy of not building roads along the China border was counterproductive. By the time New Delhi got a grip of reality, Beijing had built all weather blacktop roads on the other side of the Line of Actual Control. As India countered, standoffs and skirmishes increased. Now, when India and China have just completed a troop disengagement process after a four-year close-contact forward deployment, Beijing's move on Yarlung Tsangpo only raises more doubts on its overall political intent. Not to forget, resuming river water conversation is one of the items on the agenda of normalisation of relations. But clearly, China appears to be drawing its line on the Brahmaputra river even as it talks de-escalation on LAC. The over 10,000 MW Upper Siang project provides an answer, but in this case India is up against domestic political compulsions. The status of the project is that the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation needs to do some drilling work to carry out geological studies, important to the process of finalising the site. However, this has not happened because of local protests. Any divergence of water will adversely impact the flow of Brahmaputra during the non-monsoon months. This could stretch to four-to-five months a year. Thereafter, the river benefits and enlarges from the Indian monsoon rain. A large storage, as envisaged in the Upper Siang project, will cover for these months and help the local population against the possibility of China weaponising the Yarlung Tsangpo before it enters India. This political communication has, thus far, not succeeded locally, also complicated by the fact that one of the towns likely to be submerged is Yingkiong, which is the constituency of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Gegong Apang. Similar delays on the 850 MW Ratle project on River Chenab allowed Pakistan the space to lobby with the US as well as the World Bank and drag India to a bizarre arbitration, where two parallel processes are going on simultaneously. India now wants a complete relook at the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and has sent four notices to Pakistan. India is an upper riparian country with Pakistan and a lower riparian with China. So, the situation is not fully comparable. But the solution to problems on both fronts is similar: Build efficiently, build fast. The reason is that trust stands eroded with both countries. The last agreement India had with China on sharing of hydrological data for Brahmaputra and Sutlej has expired. The Indus Waters Treaty was a more robust affair, which allowed Pakistan legal options to hold up even run-of-the-river projects on the tributaries of Indus in India. In other words, India seems to have had a rough deal with legal instruments with both countries. While it has none to tie down China as a lower riparian country, it has to contend with a strong treaty with Pakistan as an upper riparian. The way through this conundrum is just like with border roads, India has no option but to build hydel projects with strategic urgency, keeping in mind that it's on the receiving end of what China is doing - be it environmental like glacial lake outburst flood (Glof) or water security like the Yarlung Tsangpo plans. The Hellenic Air Force plans to acquire weapons worth at least €1 bln to equip the upgraded F-16 Viper, older versions of the fighter jet, and the F-35s that Greece is set to receive by the end of the decade. This initiative aims to address a critical gap created during the years of financial crisis, when defense budgets were virtually non-existent. The Hellenic Air Force General Staff has finalized its prioritization of weapons and ammunition needs, and a comprehensive list has been submitted to the political leadership for review, according to Kathimerini sources. The air force’s weapons acquisition plan is expected to be officially announced within the first two months of 2025, when Defense Minister Nikos Dendias offers a detailed presentation of Agenda 2030 reforms for the military. However, specific details, including the number of missiles, their versions, and other technical characteristics, will remain classified, as these armaments constitute the core weaponry of the air force. The range of Hellenic Air Force purchases includes at least five different types of weapons, such as air superiority missiles, land-attack missiles, anti-ship missiles, stand-off weapons, and anti-radar systems, Kathimerini sources have informed. According to the same sources, these weapons have been cleared for Greece, with approval from US defense authorities. The Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs has, in some cases, also granted approval. What remains to be determined is whether all the released weapons will be purchased at once or if the acquisition will be spread over the decade, depending on operational needs.NAU Sports Year in Review: Olympic appearances and multiple records shattered in 2024
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 26, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shares of ASP Isotopes Inc. (NASDAQ: ASPI) have continue their downward spiral falling 16% over the past five days, despite the company having issued a rebuttal to a scathing report from activist short-seller Fuzzy Panda Research . The stock price trades at $4.52 per share, marking a 40% decline since the release of the short seller report late last month. The Fuzzy Panda report, published on November 26, accused ASP Isotopes of misleading investors about the viability of its nuclear fuel technologies. These allegations have not only sent the company's stock spiraling but have also triggered a securities class action lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. (ASPI) Securities Class Action: The lawsuit claims that ASP Isotopes overstated the effectiveness of its enrichment technologies, including its Aerodynamic Separation Process (ASP) and Quantum Enrichment, and misled investors about the potential of its high-assay low-enriched uranium facility. The Fuzzy Panda report, which alleges that ASPI's technology is "outdated and unlikely to be commercially viable," has further fueled investor concerns. The report contends that the company employs "old, disregarded laser enrichment technology" to falsely portray itself as a cutting-edge player in the nuclear fuel industry. It also claims that former executives of Centrus Energy had deemed ASPI's technology "virtually worthless." Following the release of the report, ASPI's stock price plunged 23% in a single trading day. The events have prompted shareholder rights firm Hagens Berman to investigate potential investor losses. “We are investigating whether ASP Isotopes misled investors about the true potential and viability of its enrichment technologies," said Reed Kathrein, the Hagens Berman partner leading the firm's investigation. The event served as a visual celebration of mountain life and an artistic reminder of the urgent need to preserve this invaluable heritage in the face of environmental and cultural challenges. In the senior youth group, the first three prizes were won by Attiqa Malik, Shanza Noreen and Afia Risha respectively, while Salslabeen Aslam, Hamna and Syed Moazzam won first three prizes in the students category respectively. He further lauded the partnership between the Punjab Arts Council and Devcom-Pakistan, noting that such collaborations are vital for raising awareness and fostering appreciation for mountain ecosystems and communities.MORGANTOWN – The window to postseason eligibility is quickly closing for both the West Virginia University and UCF football teams. There’s still some room left for the Mountaineers to wiggle into a bowl game, though not much. They need to win one of their last two games to qualify for the postseason. For the Knights, the window is almost shut. UCF must sweep their last two games to earn the six wins necessary to guarantee eligibility. Both teams understand the stakes of today’s 3:30 p.m. matchup at Milan Puskar Stadium (ESPNU). The Mountaineers and Knights are both backed against the wall. If the Mountaineers lose, they enter their regular season finale at Texas Tech with everything on the line. If the Knights lose, they slump into their last game with nothing to play for but pride. “We’re looking forward to two more opportunities that are guaranteed,” WVU tight end Kole Taylor said. “You can’t dwell upon what happened in the past.” Yet it’s past play that put both the Mountaineers (5-5, 4-3 Big 12) and the Knights (4-6, 2-5 Big 12) in their current predicaments. Both teams entered the season with much higher hopes than they have right now, wanting to finish at or near the top of the conference standings with a chance at the Big 12 title game. Inconsistency and poor defense has done WVU in. The Mountaineers have pulled off some good road wins, but have fizzled at home, thanks in large part to a pass defense ranked near the bottom of the Football Bowl Subdivision in several key categories. If WVU falls today in Morgantown, it will be only the second season in program history with five losses. The Knights opened the 2024 campaign strong with three straight wins, but have lost five of their last six, including five in a row midseason. UCF’s pass defense has struggled this year, too. It has allowed 19 passing touchdowns so far, tied for 108th in the FBS, compared to the 21 allowed by WVU which is tied for 120th. The Knights are 96th nationally allowing 239.5 passing yards per game, compared to WVU’s 269.6 passing yards allowed per game, which ranks 127th. As it stands, both teams lean on their running games to carry their respective offenses. WVU ranks 27th at 197.2 rushing yards per game. Only Army gains more on the ground than UCF’s 262.8 yards per game. The Knights are led by running back R.J. Harvey, who is tied for third nationally at 132.8 rushing yards per game. WVU coach Neal Brown sees the strengths in his team, but said the Mountaineers are still searching for a game when all those strengths come together and show out at the same time. “I don’t mean to sound like a broken record but, to me, it’s about playing well – special teams, offense and defense at the same time, and we haven’t done that enough consistently,” he said. “We’ve been an inconsistent football team. That’s why we’re 5-5, because we’ve been inconsistent. And so to me, it’s how do we finish out this month? Playing at our best in those three phases together? All right, if we can do that, then we’ll be a really good football team.” The Mountaineer players agree that they need complete games in their last two contests to make sure they can play in their fourth bowl in five seasons. There is a greater sense of urgency around the locker room, Taylor said, as the players understand what another inconsistent performance can cost them. “We understand that there’s two (games) to win one,” he said, “just to get an extra game and have an opportunity to play in the postseason. We understand that’s where we’re at and that’s the team we are. “Whether we want to be in that situation or not, that’s the situation we’re in,” Taylor continued. “We’ve got to win at least one more to get a bowl game, but we want to win out.”Google and the US government faced off in a federal court on Monday, as each side delivered closing arguments in a case revolving around the technology giant's alleged unfair domination of online advertising. The trial in a Virginia federal court is Google's second US antitrust case now under way as the US government tries to rein in the power of big tech.
