In a foundational step toward leveling the playing field for rural communities statewide, two Colorado rural towns — Kiowa and Elizabeth — are crossing the digital divide to connectivity, courtesy of the (CPF). The (CBO) announced Monday the two communities are the first to benefit from the state’s nearly $1 billion allocation from federal broadband initiatives, including CPF. At the start of this year, the CBO determined which counties across the state would each receive a $113.5 million allocation from the CPF. The CBO identified the counties with the highest need based on the percentage of unserved locations and the percentage of households with broadband subscriptions. Residents can explore a map of funded counties on the CBO’s . Rural areas like Kiowa and Elizabeth have often lagged behind urban communities in accessing high-speed broadband, according to the office’s executive director. “While residents along Colorado’s Front Range enjoy opportunities like remote work, telehealth and online education, rural populations often remain disconnected,” Brandy Reitter, CBO executive director, told . “Addressing this disparity is crucial to ensure everyone can benefit from modern technology , the Internet service provider behind the CPF-funded project in Kiowa and Elizabeth, was chosen through a competitive application process earlier this year. The middle-mile network the company constructed between the two towns laid the foundation for future connectivity opportunities. “Maverix is among many great partners in Colorado’s effort to expand and improve broadband,” Reitter said via email. “This fiber connection can be used for years to come, allowing additional providers to expand broadband in these areas.” The middle-mile network not only increases the number of providers, it enhances competition, ultimately lowering consumer costs. One person using the network described it as beneficial for all involved. “This fiber project is a big deal for the entire county,” Corey Basquez, the first resident connected through the project, in a statement. “It will help residents and businesses with the cost of Internet, and our schools and businesses will benefit from the fiber that is now available.” The new digital infrastructure should have considerable positive impact across the public and private sectors, Reitter said. “Businesses, schools and public services in the area will benefit greatly from the middle-mile network because, in addition to potentially providing better service to these entities, it will also provide much-needed redundancy,” she said. “And redundancy ensures a higher probability that people and organizations can stay online during severe weather events.” CPF funding has set the stage, but Colorado is also gearing up to deploy $826.5 million from the federal program. Part of these funds will support additional middle-mile projects in underserved rural areas, according to Reitter. The state also recently launched a grant program funded by its , allocating $14 million annually with 60 percent reserved for middle-mile projects. “By 2027, Colorado has a goal to improve broadband access by building a network for future generations,” Reitter revealed. “This includes improving adoption by expanding digital inclusion and adoption to achieve affordability, access and digital literacy and building a more resilient network that addresses Colorado’s unique geographic challenges.”

Title: "Jian Jun's Opinion on FIFPRO Best XI: Is Replacing Mbappe with Salah at Right Wing More Reasonable?"Wright singled out Aaron Ramsdale as the ideal candidate to reinforce Chelsea's defense. Ramsdale, who currently plays for Arsenal, has impressed with his performances this season and has been touted as one of the best young goalkeepers in the Premier League. His shot-stopping abilities, commanding presence in the box, and excellent distribution make him a valuable asset for any team looking to shore up their defense.Ultimately, the end of the "laying flat" era for savings serves as a timely reminder of the importance of financial resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing world. While passive income can provide a sense of security and stability, it is not a panacea for the complexities of modern life. By embracing a more proactive and diversified approach to income generation, individuals can better navigate the challenges of today's economic landscape and secure a more sustainable future for themselves.

NoneNoneA FORMER Jersey doctor who is behind bars for a long history of financial crimes has been given extra prison time after trying to block authorities from recovering stolen money and spending thousands on expensive dinners and holidays while owing the taxpayer millions. Gerald Martin Smith, who was jailed earlier this year for obtaining a Covid loan with a fake name and using part of it to help pay off a £72m court order, has had 13 months added to his sentence. Smith, who was previously jailed for stealing millions from a software company, deliberately “obstructed” investigators from taking control of his properties in central London to help repay the millions he owes to taxpayers. Undated handout picture of Gerald Smith of Wentworth, Surrey, who was jailed for eight years after he stole £35m from a computer software company in Berkshire. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Wednesday November 14, 2007. The multi-millionaire businessman serving an eight-year prison sentence for fraud has been ordered to pay nearly £41 million. The Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) said it believed the confiscation order was the largest amount secured under criminal proceedings to date. See PA story CRIME Businessman. Photo credit should read: PA Wire...REF:CRIME Businessman 1.jpg.NOP. (39476488) The Serious Fraud Office, which oversees financial crime cases in the UK, uncovered Smith’s orchestration of a plan to conceal the ownership of a Bloomsbury property containing three apartments to avoid paying an £80m court order. The former doctor persuaded an old friend from medical school to transfer ownership of the property to a company registered in the British Virgin Islands that Smith secretly controlled. Smith also changed the locks and arranged for two tenants to occupy the flat to further obstruct the selling of the property that was required to recover stolen funds. Investigators also discovered that Smith continued to breach court-imposed spending restrictions by receiving regular financial support from his brother. Over a 19-month period, he spent over £53,000 dining at luxury London restaurants and enjoying holidays in Mallorca. Smith was jailed for eight years in 2006 for stealing £35m from a software company called Izodia. The theft caused the collapse of the stock market-listed company and shareholders lost all their investments. In 2007, the former doctor was ordered to pay a confiscation order of £41m – the largest order made in criminal proceedings at the time. Smith did not pay any of the stolen money back following his release, and he told the court in 2019 that he was too poor to pay back what he owed – despite visiting numerous luxury destinations and using a private jet for more than 100 trips in a single year. In 2022, Mr Smith avoided jail after what was described as “lavish” spending of frozen assets at bars, restaurants and wine merchants. He was instead handed an eight-month suspended sentence. Mr Smith’s criminal record dates back to 1993, when he was jailed for two years for taking £2m from the pension fund of Farr Group, a construction company. Serious Fraud Office director Nick Ephgrave said: “We are determined to prevent criminals benefiting from their crime, and wherever assets are hidden or obstructed, we will go after them. “This sentence should serve as a warning to Mr Smith and those assisting him that we won’t stop in our recovery and enforcement of court orders against him.”
