DAZN ADVANCES GLOBAL EXPANSION WITH ACQUISITION OF FOXTEL, A LEADING AUSTRALIAN SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA GROUP

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — On a damp Wednesday night with temperatures dipping into the 30s, fans in sparsely filled stands bundled up to watch Buffalo beat Eastern Michigan 37-30 on gray turf. The lopsided game was not particularly notable, but it was played on one of the nights the Mid-American Conference has made its own: A weeknight. “A lot of the general public thinks we play all of our games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, not just some of them in November,” MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a telephone interview this week. “What it has done is help take what was a pretty darned good regional conference and has given it a national brand and made it a national conference.” When the conference has played football games on ESPN or ESPN2 over the last two seasons, the linear television audience has been 10 times larger than when conference schools meet on Saturdays and get lost in the shuffle when viewers have many more choices. The most-watched MAC game over the last two years was earlier this month on a Wednesday night when Northern Illinois won at Western Michigan and there were 441,600 viewers, a total that doesn’t include streaming that isn’t captured by Nielsen company. During the same span, the linear TV audience has been no larger than 46,100 to watch two MAC teams play on Saturdays. “Having the whole nation watching on Tuesday and Wednesday night is a huge deal for the MAC,” Eastern Michigan tight end Jere Getzinger said. “Everybody wants to watch football so if you put it on TV on a Tuesday or Wednesday, people are going to watch.” ESPN has carried midweek MAC football games since the start of the century. ESPN and the conference signed a 13-year extension a decade ago that extends their relationship through at least the 2026-27 season. The conference has made the most of the opportunities, using MACtion as a tag on social media for more than a decade and it has become a catchy marketing term for the Group of Five football programs that usually operate under the radar in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York. Attendance does tend to go down with weeknight games, keeping some students out of stadiums because they have class or homework and leading to adults staying away home because they have to work the next morning. “The tradeoff is the national exposure,” Buffalo coach Pete Lembo said. “You know November nights midweek the average fan is going to park on the couch, have a bowl of chips and salsa out in front, and watch the game from there." When the Bulls beat Ball State 51-48 in an overtime thriller on a Tuesday night earlier this month, the announced attendance was 12,708 and that appeared to be generous. There were many empty seats after halftime. “You watch the games on TV, the stadiums all look like this,” Buffalo fan Jeff Wojcicki said. “They are not packed, but it’s the only game on, and you know where to find it.” Sleep and practice schedules take a hit as well, creating another wave of challenges for students to attend class and coaches to prepare without the usual rhythm of preparing all week to play on Saturday. “Last week when we played at Ohio in Athens, we had a 4-four bus ride home and got home at about 3:30 a.m.,” Eastern Michigan center Broderick Roman said. “We still had to go to class and that was tough, but it's part of what you commit to as an athlete.” That happens a lot in November when the MAC shifts its unique schedule. During the first two weeks of the month, the conference had 10 games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays exclusively. This week, there were five games on Tuesday and Wednesday while only one was left in the traditional Saturday slot with Ball State hosting Bowling Green. Next week, Toledo plays at Akron and Kent State visits Buffalo on Tuesday night before the MAC schedule wraps up with games next Friday and Saturday to determine which teams will meet in the conference title game on Dec. 7 in Detroit. In all, MAC teams will end up playing about 75% of their games on a Saturday and the rest on November weeknights. When the Eagles wrapped up practice earlier this week, two days before they played the Bulls, tight end Jere Getzinger provided some insight into the effects of the scheduling quirk. “It's Monday, but for us it's like a Thursday,” he said. Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler said he frankly has a hard time remembering what day it is when the schedule shift hits in November. “The entire week gets turned upside down,” Loeffler said. “It’s wild, but it’s great for the league because there’s two days a week this time of year that people around the country will watch MAC games.” AP freelance writer Jonah Bronstein contributed to this report. In an unprecedented diplomatic move, President-elect Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration on January 20. According to Trump's spokesperson, this gesture highlights his willingness to maintain open dialogues with global leaders, even those who are competitors or adversaries. Despite criticism during his first term for similar actions, Trump's team insists that dialogues like these are crucial for maintaining worldwide peace. Incoming White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitte emphasized that Trump places America's interests at the forefront of such international engagements, though it's unclear if Xi Jinping has accepted the invitation. The current administration, while withholding comments on the invitation, recognizes the progress made in US-China relations. White House representative John Kirby emphasized the significance of this bilateral relationship, acknowledging persistent disagreements but also the critical opportunities it presents for future US diplomacy. (With inputs from agencies.)Sitting down for most of the day is obviously bad for us, known to raise our risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer and even an early death. However, it’s largely unavoidable for those of us with desk-based jobs. Too much sitting is also detrimental for our mental health, a study from sportswear company Asics has found. Survey results from more than 7000 desk-based workers found that mood drops after just two hours and stress spikes four hours in. However, taking a 15-minute exercise break reverses these effects. Taking a midday stroll or jog can vastly improve your health at work. Credit: Joe Armao Professor Brendon Stubbs, a researcher in movement and mental wellbeing at King’s College London, who led the study, says incorporating movement into our working day – among other healthy habits – could be game-changing. “Each habit can contribute to positive mental health, and the more people do, especially over time, the greater the physical and mental health benefits,” he says. Here, he shares his top tips. 8am: Read a book on your commute instead of scrolling social media. Most of us are spending up to nine hours of our day sitting down. If you’re seated for your commute, at least make sure you’re engaging your brain, Stubbs says. “It is passive sedentary behaviour (such as sitting down to watch Netflix or scroll social media) and not active sedentary behaviour (sitting down to read a book or play a game, for example) that is particularly not good for our mental health,” he explains. Swap your afternoon biscuit for a bar of dark chocolate, a healthier option that can lift your mood. A study from Stubbs and colleagues which looked at the self-reported health habits and medical notes of around 40,000 people found that those engaging in more than three hours of active sedentary behaviour per day had a 26 per cent lower risk of depression compared to those who did less than this. “Additionally, our research has shown that excessive social media is literally rewiring our brain and altering our reward-processing systems, making it harder to become motivated for everyday tasks,” Stubbs adds.None

Biden calls for Assad to be 'held accountable'

The Russia-Ukraine war, which has been raging since 2022, has witnessed a major escalation lately, with Russian President recently describing the Oreshnik missile as a “state-of-the-art, modern and very new weapon”. Published: December 22, 2024 10:12 PM IST By Edited by : On Sunday, December 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin was asked if recent events could lead to World War III. He urged people not to spread fear, but did acknowledge that the risks were increasing. Putin told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin that there was no need to frighten anyone, but agreed that many of the dangers were increasing. He also claimed that Russia’s rivals were making the situation more tense and said that, if that was what they wanted, so be it, according to a report by the Sputnik India media house. Russia would always react to any challenges, said Putin and said he believed that, when current opponents and potential partners recognized this, they would understand the importance of finding compromises to resolve issues. VERY NEW WEAPON: ORESHNIK On Thursday (December 19), Putin had described the Oreshnik as a “state-of-the-art, modern and very new weapon”. He made this statement in response to a Western campaign criticizing Russia’s latest intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). Russian military experts claim the US and its European allies are spreading rumours and conducting a propaganda campaign about the Oreshnik missile’s abilities because they lack an air defence system capable of stopping it. A retired major-general of the Indian Army has gone on record saying that the West is trying to ridicule Russia by claiming its technology is old-fashioned and that their own air defence systems are much stronger. This story about Russia’s military equipment spread by the Western nations was “misleading”, the Indian Army veteran said. As a result, Putin is challenging the West to show whether or not their air defence systems can destroy the Oreshnik missile. He emphasised that the Oreshnik was actually a very powerful weapon and that Russia would soon begin mass producing it. Currently, the Oreshnik travels at a speed of Mach 10, or about 12,300 kilometres per hour, making it impossible for anyone in the world to intercept it. Additionally, the Oreshnik is an MIRV, which means it can carry multiple warheads. This makes it nearly impossible to shoot it down in its entirety. That was why Putin had challenged the West to a technical duel to prove their capabilities, he explained. A retired group captain has also supported the major-general’s statement. He said the Western nations were conducting a propaganda campaign to undermine the credibility of the Oreshnik missile. He emphasised to the media house that it could not be intercepted—let alone shot down—by such systems as the Patriot or THAAD, or any of the other air defence systems used by America and its European allies. The group captain believes that, President Putin challenging the West to use their best air defence systems against the Oreshnik signified he was confident that the missile would outperform American and European military technologies. Russia has highly effective weapons systems and, by challenging the West to deploy their advanced air defence systems, the Russian President has boldly invited the West to test Russia’s strength and capabilities, a retired lieutenant-colonel also emphasised to the media house. These experts made their comments just hours after the Russian leader challenged the West to set up all their advanced air defence systems, including the Patriot missile system, to test the effectiveness of the Oreshnik. This challenge came as Western experts expressed doubts about the missile’s ability to get past NATO’s air defence networks. Putin, at his year-end press conference in Moscow, invited the Western experts to suggest a technological experiment—a high-tech duel—for those in the West and the US who paid them for their analyses. They could choose a target in Kiev, bunch all of their air defence and missile defence resources there, and Russia would use the Oreshnik to strike that target. Putin said they were fully ready for such an experiment. Putin added with a touch of sarcasm that he was unsure if the US and its allies fully understood the changes that Russia had made to its nuclear doctrine. He suggested that this question should be addressed to them. The Russian president was thus signalling a warning to NATO and its allies, the retired major-general told Sputnik. He noted that everyone knew Ukraine was a non-nuclear state and was supported by such nuclear nations as the US, UK and France in its conflict with Russia. The expert emphasised that Putin’s recent comments was a veiled threat that such countries as the US, Britain and France could be seen as potential targets because of their support for Ukraine. President Putin had, thus, delivered a clear message to the West that Russia would not hesitate to use its nuclear weapons if it felt its security was coming under threat, retired lieutenant-colonel concluded.
