The move forms part of the Government’s drive to increase recycling rates, which have held at about 45% of household waste since 2015. Environment minister Mary Creagh said: “For far too long, the nation has seen its recycling rates stagnate and relied on burning household waste, rather than supporting communities to keep resources in use for longer. “That ends today, with clear conditions for new energy from waste plants – they must be efficient and support net zero and our economic growth mission, before they can get the backing needed to be built.” Developers will also have to ensure their incinerators are ready for carbon capture technology, and demonstrate how the heat they produce can be used to help cut heating bills for households. The Government expects that its “crackdown” on new incinerators will mean only a limited number are built, while still reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and enabling the country to process the waste it produces. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the country was almost at the point where it had enough waste facilities to handle non-recyclable rubbish, and so had limited need for new incinerators. But the proposals stop short of the plans included in the Conservatives’ 2024 manifesto, which committed to a complete ban on new incinerators due to their “impact on local communities” and declining demand as recycling increased.

In a significant move, the United States has announced sanctions against 21 senior Venezuelan officials for their involvement in suppressing protests after a disputed presidential election in July. The sanctions target high-ranking members of President Nicolas Maduro's administration, following allegations of election fraud claimed by Washington. The Biden administration emphasized that the sanctions aim not only to hold President Maduro accountable but also target officials supporting his regime through repressive methods. Venezuela has retaliated by dismissing these measures as illegitimate and has stood firm against international pressure. Venezuelan opposition leaders have accused President Maduro of electoral misconduct, advocating transparency. They contend that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez legitimately won and have published alleged ballot box results. Meanwhile, Gonzalez resides in Spain but intends to return for a planned inauguration in January. (With inputs from agencies.)

Stockton Springs teen kills big buck with crossbowSaturday, November 23, 2024 Heydar Aliyev International Airport is advancing its use of cutting-edge technologies to elevate service standards and streamline operations. In the initial rollout at Terminal 1, the airport has introduced self-service kiosks for flight check-in and baggage drop. Plans are in place to extend these facilities to Terminal 2. This initiative aims to decrease wait times, simplify the check-in process, and enhance the overall passenger experience. The newly installed kiosks allow travelers to efficiently check themselves in, choose seats, print boarding passes, and handle baggage without the need to queue at conventional check-in counters. Travelers are encouraged to review their airline’s baggage guidelines beforehand to facilitate a seamless check-in experience. Those with baggage that exceeds weight limits should proceed to traditional check-in counters. Future enhancements will include the ability to make payments at the kiosks and additional features will be introduced. Currently, the services of “Self Check-In” and “Baggage Drop-Off” are accessible to AZAL passengers, with Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Uzbekistan Airways, and Kuwait Airways expected to follow suit shortly. Designed primarily for direct flights departing from Baku, these kiosks are set to save passengers time and increase comfort. The registration process for transit passengers will continue as usual. This technological upgrade forms part of the ongoing efforts by Heydar Aliyev International Airport to integrate more advanced solutions and uphold a high standard of service. The airport remains committed to offering its passengers top-tier, internationally compliant services. For any inquiries or assistance with the new self-service options, passengers are advised to speak with airport staff.

In the winter, the natural world seems to shimmer with crystalline beauty. Bird song seems more vibrant as it echoes off snow-covered forests while tracks reveal a glimpse of winter survival. Despite all the natural beauty, this time of year can dampen our spirit of adventure and exploration. I urge you to avoid viewing winter as dark and dreary and instead challenge you to see a landscape blanketed in crisp white snow, as clean and fresh to enlist a feeling of new beginnings and adventure. This season just begs to be explored. If you are tired of waiting in long lift lines and weaving through the mass of bodies barreling downhill, you have so many more options for winter experiences. ‘Tis the season of new beginnings after all, so how about trying some new winter adventures this year? A surefire way to escape those lift lines and get some of the best-untouched snow is to explore the backcountry. The backcountry provides a blank canvas for all sorts of winter activities. Earn your turns, by skinning or split boarding. Cruise through the forest on Nordic skis or a fat bike. For those of us hikers out there who don’t want to take a break from the solitude of getting out on the trail, snowshoeing is a must. However you choose to get out in the backcountry, it is important to keep safety in mind and always be aware of the snow conditions and terrain you are traveling through. If you love old-fashioned winter activities, then why not take an ice-skating outing? Nothing feels more traditional to the season than gliding hand-in-hand with someone special, round and round a glistening ice rink. There are lots of ice rinks around to choose from. Many of them are surrounded by the hustle and bustle of shopping centers, cafes and fireplaces for that truly winter wonderland appeal. For the more rugged winter adventurer, I have been told that this activity isn’t really about the fish at all. Winter anglers reap the most placid of the season’s rewards: tranquil landscapes, animal encounters, and early morning sunlight bouncing along the frozen water. Whether you set your chair down and cut a hole or find an ice-fishing cabin to rent or put on your waders with warm socks; do not forget to get a fishing license first. Imagine a day where you do not have any responsibilities. Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? One of my favorite winter activities is taking a true day off. No plans. No to-do lists. No objective. Wake up and let the day unfold as it may. I will admit this isn’t exclusively winter activities but something about the winter makes doing nothing feel more acceptable and appropriate. If nothing feels like a daunting task, maybe shoot for a day of less. You may be surprised that less truly can be more. Whether you love winter for its exceptional scenery and tranquility or its fast downhill thrills, there is something for everyone. Winter is the “start fresh” season and a perfect time to reach outside of our comfort zones. If you are used to spending most or all of your free time riding the lifts, remember that there is so much more to do. Get back to the basics and build a snowman or have a good old-fashioned snowball fight. Who knows, you may find a new passion this winter season. The opportunities are as endless as your imagination.

AU Teacher Prize winner, Adeeko, creates tech tutorials in YorubaDonald Hand Jr. racked up a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds to help Boston College stave off visiting Fairleigh Dickinson 78-70 on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Chad Venning added 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting and Dion Brown contributed eight points, eight rebounds and four assists as the Eagles (8-5) wrapped up their nonconference slate with just their second win in six games. Ahmed Barba-Bey, a grad transfer from Division II, exploded for a season-high 31 points to power FDU (4-11). Barba-Bey buried 8 of 9 attempts from the 3-point arc. Terrence Brown added 15 of his 20 points in the second half, as the Knights made it close before falling to 0-10 on the road this season. Bismark Nsiah scored 10 points. Boston College led 70-59 with 3:39 to play when Barba-Bey was fouled attempting a corner 3. He made all three of his foul shots, and after a stop Brown got to the bucket to cut FDU's deficit to six. It was 72-67 when Venning made a clutch turnaround jumper from the high post with 51 seconds left. Boston College let Barba-Bey get loose for his eighth 3-pointer, pulling FDU within four, its closest margin of the half. But Hand drove to the basket and scored with 29 seconds on the clock, and FDU was out of time. The Knights trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, but Barba-Bey kept them in the game. He made a fastbreak layup off Brown's steal and added a 3-pointer on the next possession, turning what was a 10-point deficit to a manageable 29-24 game. Boston College led 38-28 at halftime, with Hand scoring 15 for the hosts and Barba-Bey pouring in 16 for the Knights, including 4-of-5 shooting from deep. FDU pulled within nine points three times in the early stages of the second half, the third coming when Nsiah knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 56-47 with about 10 minutes to go. --Field Level Media

Kate Hoey was reacting to comments from the CEO of the Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland , Conal Heatley, in an interview with the News Letter. Mr Heatley had said that one of the reasons he wanted to drop the flag as the official emblem of Team NI was because it had been placed on the homes of ethnic minority people as part of a bid to force them out, and “that is not something we want to be associated with”. Advertisement Advertisement He said that the flag is offensive to “a considerable section of the community”, and had prepared to discuss a replacement for the Ulster Banner at the body’s AGM on Wednesday night. Baroness Hoey is an independent member of the Lords who had served as the Labour government’s minister for sports from 1999 to 2001. Reacting to Mr Heatley, she said: “The comments by the chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland were insulting to the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland who see the Ulster Banner as the flag to rally round in many sporting events. "We all shared in Rory McIlroy’s gesture of draping himself in the flag when winning a major golfing championship and the Northern Ireland football team celebrations with the flag in achieving qualification for the Euros. Advertisement Advertisement "There will always be a tiny minority who disgrace the flag but that is no reason to change its use in the Commonwealth Games. “The Republic of Ireland has chosen not to be one of the 56 independent countries of the Commonwealth, yet those athletes in Northern Ireland who choose to compete for Ireland in the Olympics are still able to compete for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games. "I have yet to hear of any past eligible team members refuse a place because of the Ulster Banner flag. Rather the opposite: there is great enthusiasm to represent Northern Ireland in every Commonwealth Games from every sport. “Mr Heatley would be better spending his time ensuring that everyone in Northern Ireland has the right to choose who to compete for, as currently in many sports there is no option to compete for the British team at the Olympics unless moving to GB, because of the all-Ireland governing bodies of the sports. Advertisement Advertisement "I know of tennis clubs in Northern Ireland who would prefer to be affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association in Britain rather than, or as well as, Tennis Ireland, but cannot because it is an all-Ireland governing body.” Mr Heatley said he did not wish to respond to Baroness Hoey. Making similar comments earlier on Wednesday was the leader of the DUP, Gavin Robinson. Speaking on Good Morning Ulster, he too had been asked about Mr Heatley’s remarks on racism and the flag. Advertisement Advertisement "I think that last comment was an appalling comment to make. Remember, there'd been a protest in front of City Hall during the summer on race issues, and a gentleman was holding an Irish tricolour, yet I don't hear such political commentary in that direction. "I think in Northern Ireland we've recognised over many years that sport unites people. And yet here we have somebody who's charged wth encouraging success through sport engaging in politics in the most unhelpful way. "I don't think this is a good initiaitive on his part. I don't think this assists in sport, nor does it assist in bringing people together, when this chief executive appears to believe it's his role to pick scabs on identity. "There are people in Northern Ireland who have the proud ability to showcase their talent be it for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, Team GB in the Olympics, or Team Ireland – and they do that without any thought whatsoever about constitutional politics. "He should leave it to politicians.” Advertisement Advertisement In his News Letter interview, published on Wednesday, Mr Heatley had been asked if he was planning to drop the Ulster Banner because of an upsurge in requests to do so. "There's always been chatter,” he said. "I'm trying to choose my words very carefully. "The Ulster Banner of late, and I'm sure people would be very aware of that, has been misappropriated by a small number of people. "And I refer to newcomers. We've had newcomers, NHS staff, chased out of their homes by having the Ulster Banner put on their windows. That is not something we want to be associated with. "And that's been part of the thought process where we need to be looking and saying 'How can we have something that is inclusive? How can we invite these people to take part in our sports and our clubs if that's the imagery that's around it?’" Advertisement Advertisement Mr Heatley told BBC News NI today that his organisation had received some “threatening and abusive language on social media” over the past couple of days since news of his flag plans had emerged. “For the safety of staff and the public who may be using the office, we have decided to keep it closed for the next few days and have reported those to the police,” he said. Can Matt Gaetz return to Congress or could Ron DeSantis make him senator? What's next for the MAGA firebrand Matt Gaetz had resigned from Congress after nomination for AG Sign up for the latest with DailyMail.com's U.S. politics newsletter By SARAH EWALL-WICE, SENIOR U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM IN WASHINGTON, DC Published: 19:47, 21 November 2024 | Updated: 20:13, 21 November 2024 e-mail 91 View comments Matt Gaetz abruptly resigned from Congress after he was tapped to be Donald Trump's attorney general, but now that he withdrew his name from Cabinet consideration it raises questions about his future. The embattled MAGA loyalist promptly resigned from Congress after President-elect Donald Trump named him as his pick for top law enforcement officer last week. But his nomination immediately received pushback from Democrats and even some Republicans due to a House Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz for alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor and illicit drug use. His House exit ended the committee's jurisdiction over Gaetz leaving the findings of its probe in limbo. But now that the 42-year-old is no longer up for attorney general, it is not clear whether he could end up back on Capitol Hill. In his resignation letter from the current 118th Congress, Gaetz said he did not intend to take the oath of office for the 119th Congress - which begins in January. In November, Gaetz was reelected to another term starting next year with more than 66 percent of the vote. If he is no longer seeking to join the incoming Trump administration, Gaetz technically could take the oath of office come January and join the new Congress. While that is a possibility, it could also lead to the House Ethics Committee relaunching its investigation and revealing the potentially damning findings. Former Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration for Attorney General as his confirmation faced an uphill climb in the Senate. It is not clear what's next for the MAGA firebrand after he promptly resigned from Congress last week, but there are several possibilities that could bring him back to Washington The future of that report as of now is uncertain after the committee was deadlocked in a vote on whether to make it public. Should Gaetz not return to the House, that vacant seat would need to be filled through a special election. After Gaetz's nomination was announced last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had called for an immediate special election to fill the vacancy. There are two other possibilities that could bring Gaetz back to Washington in the new year if he does not to return to the House. One less likely scenario is Gaetz could be appointed to fill the Florida Senate seat being vacated by outgoing Senator Marco Rubio who will have to resign upon his likely confirmation as Trump's Secretary of State. Some lawmakers have already signaled they are open to the possibility of Gaetz becoming a senator including GOP Florida Senator Rick Scott. Gaetz with Vice President-elect Vance on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, November 20 as they arrived for meetings with senators. One day later, Gaetz withdrew himself from consideration for Attorney General But that decision resides with DeSantis, who is tasked with appointing Rubio's replacement for two years before a special election is held in 2026. There have been several prominent names already floated as potential Rubio replacements including Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump. DailyMail.com reached out to DeSantis' office for comment. The other possibility is that Gaetz could end up joining the Trump administration in a role that does not require Senate confirmation. Then-Rep. Matt Gaetz in the Manhattan criminal court with Trump while he was on trial for covering up the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels Past presidents including Biden have brought allies into the White House for such roles after their names were withdrawn from consideration for other roles after it was determined they would not get the necessary votes in the Senate. Read More Trump breaks his silence on Matt Gaetz's withdrawing as his AG pick 'respects' the decision Gaetz could end up serving as a senior adviser or in the some legal counsel capacity as he is a lawyer. In announcing his withdrawal, Gaetz did not signal which direction his future would take, only that he remains 'fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history.' Trump also gave no indication in his response to the nomination withdrawal that Gaetz will be joining is administration but said his loyal supporter has a 'wonderful future.' 'I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!' the president-elect posted on Truth Social. Gaetz' wife Ginger gave her own cryptic response on Thursday, writing 'The end of an era' with an image of her and the former lawmaker on the steps of the capitol, perhaps signaling a return to Congress is not in his future. President-elect Donald Trump and his Republican accomplices relentlessly attacked the rule of law, a basic foundation of our constitutional democracy. Mr. Trump argued, without any evidence, that the justice system is already politicized because of all the criminal charges brought against him, and his conviction on 34 felony counts. In fact, the Justice Department indicted at least seven Democrats, including President Biden’s son. If the Justice Department were politicized, as Mr. Trump claims, none of these prosecutions would have occurred. In fact, the Justice Department went after these people, including Mr. Trump, because it had evidence of criminal activity sufficient to present in a court of law. Going after political enemies without evidence, only because they are perceived as opponents, would politicize the Department of Justice. Doing so would undermine the rule of law and our constitutional democracy. Mr. Trump nominated Matt Gaetz as Attorney General, despite the fact that Gaetz’s only qualification is his loyalty to Donald Trump. It is Mr. Trump’s intention to politicize and weaponize the Department of Justice, thus undermining the rule of law and our constitutional democracy. (Editor's note: Matt Gaetz withdrew from the process on Thursday). Mr. Trump’s other nominees, Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence and Robert Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services also have no experience and no expertise of those departments. Replacing knowledgeable experts with complete novices and worse, political sycophants, undermines the effectiveness of those agencies and puts the national security in jeopardy as well as the health and welfare of the nation. In fact, this is a recipe for failure. But that was a campaign promise of Mr. Trump, to destroy the deep state. Even though that “deep state” was developed to keep Americans safe, healthy and prosperous. Undermining the rule of law, our constitutional democracy, the security of the nation and the health and welfare of the United States is the goal of Mr. Trump’s administration.
